Common Sense Gun Control
The National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) is a federal system used for background checks to purchase firearms. Michigan does not share mental health information with NICS that would prohibit a person from purchasing a firearm. To purchase a handgun a person is required to get a purchase permit which goes through a Michigan State Police Point of Contact background check. The State Police have access to LEIN, an in-state data base, that includes limited mental illness information; however for a long gun (riffles, ARs, shotguns) Michigan only requires a NICS check. This allows people who should not have guns to purchase assault rifles anywhere in the U.S., and allows them to purchase a handgun outside of Michigan. As your State Senator, Kristina Lodovisi will fight for legislation that will require mental health information to be share with NICS to help prevent mentally unstable individuals from purchasing any firearms; along with gun regulations that require Point of Contact background checks for all firearm sales.
Kristina Lodovisi has been given the Moms Demand Action Gun Sense Candidate distinction.
Civil Rights should be for everybody. People should be protected equally. The LGBTQ community is not included in Michigan’s Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act. There are many protected classes within Michigan Law, but it is still legal to discriminate against LGBTQ individuals in employment, education, housing, and public accommodations. Some of the biggest cities in Michigan provide local ordinances that offer some protection to the LGBTQ community, but it is time that the State of Michigan protects all of its citizens from discrimination.
As your Senator Kristina Lodovisi will fight to amend the Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act to include LGBTQ protections.
A woman has the right to decide what is best for her body. Funding for Planned Parenthood and similar women’s health organizations are essential to ensure women receive affordable healthcare including breast exams, cervical cancer screenings, and pap tests. These organizations also offer crucial services to LGBT individuals as well as men including educating individuals about how to take care of their bodies. As your State Senator, Kristina Lodovisi will fight for women’s health rights.
Instead of cutting taxes due to the current surplus, we need to shore up the Rainy-Day Fund that was drained by the 2008 recession. We need to invest more in infrastructure to improve our roads. We need to increase education spending in K-12 to ensure our kids have a competitive chance in this world. As your State Senator, Kristina Lodovisi will advocate for better roads and schools, while also being fiscally responsible to ensure the financial security of Michigan.
